Hair ties and Headbands

So we've all seen those cute elastic hair ties and headbands that are way over priced and super simple to make.   I decided to venture out and make my own rather than spend a fortune on something so simple. Here's what I learned:

  1. It takes a minute and a half to make one!
  2. I don't get massive amounts of hair stuck in them when I take them out.
  3. I still can't make a headband stay on my head for anything!
  4. I would kill myself if I had paid full price for them!
  5. $1.99 makes 1 headband and 2 hair ties.
  6. The 5/8" really is the best for hair ties.
Now the big question is do I venture out to attempt to make a headband that stays or just stick with the hair ties that work? No doubt I have 5 million other patterns on Pinterest to try!  For anyone wanting to venture out and make their own, here's what I did.  Cut 9" elastic, put ends together and tie,  "melt" ends with lighter (or candle if you can't be trusted with a lighter)!  For headbands I tried 19", but I don't know if that's too long or short for my head.  I'd love to hear any advice and I'll let you know if I stumble upon a solution!

In other happy news, I have a new power cord for my sewing machine so more home goods are on the way!

Update from The Move

I've finally come out from the rock I've been hiding under for the past 4 months! So I really wasn't hiding under a rock but just moving across country and starting a new biggie, right! I'll give you the brief overview and spare you the details of the last few months. So we moved into our townhouse and have been slowly finding furnishings for it. We had nothing when we got here so we had a lot of work to do.  Not only did we have nothing, but my husband and I have very different tastes when it comes to home decor. The OCD person that I am had every room planned as soon as I got pictures and each of those plans got vetoed. Anyhow, I think we've come up with a pretty good plan that doesn't look stupid and he doesn't hate. I hope to have pictures and projects as we go. (Still searching for all my crafting stuff like the power cord to my sewing machine)

As for the new job, I love every minute of it! I'm doing what I love and being challenged every day. I've seen more in the few months I've been on the floor than I have my entire career! It's scary but at the same time exhilarating and such an amazing learning opportunity! Alongside my NICU job I also have the challenge of restarting my Mary Kay business in a town where I don't know a soul! Sounds easy right! Well believe it or not it can be. I decided to take a baby step and put up an offer for facials on Facebook and got a few responses but only one truly panned out.  But from that one facial of a good work friend I got up the courage to talk about it with others. I've gotten a few more excited responses, so I'm anxious to see where it goes. It's always hard to stay excited about something that takes time to fully blossom, but I know it's worth the effort and risk!

So what does the future look like? Lots of pictures and projects as I continue decorating the house as well as some new stuff like product reviews and makeup tutorials. I hope you will join me as we continue our journey together! Let me know if you're out there and what you think so far! See you soon!

The Big Move

I feel like I can finally announce this now that the pieces are falling into place! The next stop on our adventure is a permanent move to Portland, Oregon! A few months back I accepted a full time position at Doernbecher Children's Hospital in their NICU on night shift.  Their unit is very similar to the facilities I've traveled to, just twice the size! I'm really excited to get grounded again but at the same time sad to be leaving my friends here in Nebraska!

For roughly the last 16 months we've been moving every 3 months to a place we've never seen and basing our decisions off what the housing department gives us. Each time we show up with minimal expectations and hope for the best. This hasn't always worked for us initially but in the end we seem to get it all worked out.  So now we prepare to move across country to a place we've never been and to a townhouse we've never seen in person. I will admit that our new landlords have been fabulous and took the time to talk to us about the area and give us some pointers. I was almost giddy when we FaceTimed to do a virtual walk through! (Technology is great isn't it!)

The most exciting thing for me will be decorating and furnishing our new place! My hope is to put my sewing machine to work and my husband's building skills (and pinterest) to furnish our new place. As we go I will do my best to document along the way and keep you posted on our progress!  Next month is going to come far too fast and be sooo exciting! Stay tuned for more!

    Homemade Holiday

With the holidays just around the corner and the shopping season about to kick into high gear, I find myself once again looking for the perfect gifts for family and friends.  While I try to find something unique to each individual every year, I'm finding it harder and harder to get excited about buying the latest gizmo or gadget. This year I've been leaning toward handmade custom gifts that compliment each recipient.

While out shopping earlier in the week with a good friend, I showed her a picture of a gift I had in mind and she absolutely loved it! She then asked if I would make her one. Of course I agreed! So a few days later I got everything out and started crafting away and my husband asks if I would make one for his grandma too. Easy enough and by now I've worked out a lot of the kinks! I get about 2/3 of the way through my current masterpiece for my bestie and my sweet husband says, "That looks really good! You should sell those as gifts." Brilliant idea, right!  So as I craft these fabulous gifts I will be adding them to the project section of my blog. They will all be custom with whatever combination meets your needs (assuming I can find it and it is within my skill set). Feel free to check out the project page to see if I can lighten your shopping load...I will be adding more as I go. Also I will be offering Pink Friday for the second year for anyone looking to score a deal on their Mary Kay essentials.

Wishing you all the best as we begin another holiday season! Try not to lose perspective on the true meaning of the seasons in all the hustle and bustle!
